The Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize for 2002 will go to Greg Kennedy for his meticulously researched book Anglo-American Strategic Relations and the Far East 1933-1939. Published by Frank Cass, Crown House, 47 Chase Side, London, Kennedy’s book charts how the strategic needs of the United States and Great Britain created a “parallel but not joint” relationship in the Far East during the interwar years that served as the precursor to the “special relationship” established by British Prime Minister Churchill and U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the war. Taking note of the unanimous opinion of the distinguished panel of judges who reviewed the book for the prize, Nicholas L. Ludington, Chairman of the panel, noted that Kennedy’s book would no doubt become a classic on interwar Anglo-American strategic and naval relations. Ludington was “very impressed” by Kennedy’s level of scholarship. “Here is a slender volume that historians studying Anglo-American relations will have to consult,” he said. Greg Kennedy earned his BA from the University of Saskatchewan, MA in War Studies from the Royal Military College of Canada, and his Ph.D. from the University of Alberta. He taught at the Royal Military College of Canada before joining the Defense Studies Department of King’s College London University. He is based at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in Shrivenham. He is editor of The Merchant Marine in International Affairs, 1850-1900, published in 2000. The Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize was established in 1984 by the Theodore Roosevelt Association, the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library, and the New York Council Navy League of the U.S. Both Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt belonged to the Navy League of New York.
